Live Stream This Week – YES!

Dear Insane Children,

Feels like it’s been ages since our last Live Stream! But the wait is over. We’ll have one this week at the usual time and place…

And you can find links to my Twitch and YouTube via Linktree…

https://linktr.ee/americanmcgee

Keep in mind that if you want to WIN PRIZES, you need to be tuned in over on Twitch.

But if you miss this live stream, you can watch the recording later via YouTube.

First Live Stream of 2022

We will discuss the contents of yesterday’s 2021 Recap Post (read that HERE).

And there will be lots of great new art to explore. Like these two beautiful illustrations from Omri and Gareth…

If you’ve followed along, you know these two illustrations are book-ends that exist to contain a visual narrative arc surrounding (child) Alice’s rebirth through the adventure of Asylum.

And there’s more where that came from!

There will be – of course – prizes! And much more!

I promise this will be the BEST LIVE STREAM OF 2022!

Don’t be late!

2021 Recap & 2022 Planning

Dear Insane Children,

I think it’s fair to say we’re all happy to see 2021 quickly vanishing in the rearview mirror. And we’re hopeful (perhaps a bit anxious) about what’s in store for 2022.

To kick things off, we’ve compiled a recap of Alice: Asylum Major Events for 2021. And a roadmap for 2022.

But before you dive into that, I want to say THANK YOU! All of this – our team of artists; the collaborative design process; the biz dev conversations being spawned – all of it is a direct result of YOUR support. It’s an odd adventure we’re on. One filled with uncertainty and peril… but it’s already produced a ton of experience and treasure. Fingers crossed we’ll reach some interesting destinations in the year ahead.

Hi everyone,
Alex Crowley here (Project Manager, Co-Writer, Lead Designer for Asylum) with a 2021 re-cap, and a glimpse into what to expect for Alice (and Oz) for 2022.

2021. The Year that Was.

Here it is in bite-size chunks.

1. ON-GOING ARTWORK CREATION:

The team created a ton of beautiful artwork. This captures key-narrative beats and compliments the experience in the Alice: Asylum Design Bible.  Here are some of the greatest 2021 hits from the art team:

2. STORY COMPLETION:

With your help and input, American and I completed the massive 183 Page Alice: Asylum Story Outline. (Read it here).

This is a HUGE piece of the puzzle locked into place that dictates the rest of the work to follow for the Design Bible. Your feedback on the narrative was overwhelmingly positive, and we thank you for your input if you weighed in on the story in any way.  Here’s what some of you had to say;

3. DESIGN BIBLE WORKING PROTOTYPE – V1 + V2 (WIP)

Earlier in the year, we prepared and released working prototypes for how the finished design document for Alice: Asylum could look. This is the foundation for the document we call the Design Bible.

It is a complete catch-all of the narrative, core game-play, and design concepts that read from start to finish as if you were playing the game of Alice: Asylum.

For the latest update, you can see it here. You’ll be seeing a LOT more in 2022.

As a reminder, the key objectives the Design Bible needs to perform are;

1. A slick sales document that is considered our best tool towards getting the potential game concept for Asylum funded by investors.

2. An enjoyable media document that will be presented and released for free for the fans.

3. An accurate technical document that acts as an initial scope of works for any potential development partner.

To date, all of the progress for the Design Bible has been received VERY positively by all potential investors and media companies it’s been read by.  From what we can see, Alice’s fans, patrons, and supporters are also keen to read the finished document.

So, we’re now going to finish it. That’s going to happen in 2022.  That’s the team’s priority to finish moving forward.
More on that later.

4. UPDATES ON DEALS AND ONGOING TALKS:

Our team’s efforts this year on Alice: Asylum is currently being actively reviewed by some of the biggest entertainment companies in the world.

You already know who they are. You’re probably a paying subscriber to at least two of them.

This is a LARGE discussion point, (American, Marc, and Adam can elaborate more than I can) but the short version is; these talks have led to something VERY exciting.

So, what is it?

5. ?????

We can’t say much YET, but, an announcement is looming that I’m sure will delight any fan of Alice. (All of us on the team know what it is… but we can’t say anything JUST yet in a public forum. ARGH!)

The year of our combined efforts has seen gears turning towards positive and exciting things. Those efforts have now borne fruit. We’re all just waiting for the final pieces to slot into place to make the final announcement.

2022 looks to be kicking off to a solid start. Stay tuned.

THANK YOU.
Thank you to all of our Patrons for helping us through an amazing 2021.

We literally couldn’t have done it without you. This leads us all up to staring down the barrel of 2022.

So, what’s next?

2022 – Alice: Asylum / Main Priority = Completion of the Design Bible.

Let’s get it done.

From the completion of the story, we now have a complete roadmap of key visuals we’d like to see in the DB. We’ve attached (scroll down) a PDF workflow snapshot taken directly from our Project Management software. This is the full list of art tasks for the team to capture the narrative. You’ll see this artwork (and potentially more) come to life in 2022. 112 art tasks now sit within that flow, and some have multiple outputs and images within the briefs. Spoilers (obviously) if you dive into that list.

The game plan is; while I am working on the layout and design work for the DB itself, the rest of the Art Team will be working on completing the key conceptual artwork and visual exploration deemed essential to accompany the Asylum Narrative.

Judging by the Art Team’s projected pace and output delivery so far, this will continue for at least another 9-12 months from this point onwards.

At this stage, for the DB itself, I also estimate the finished document will be at least 250+ pages of content.  That’s containing all story, design work, game-play ideas, and concept art for Asylum in one beautiful home.

In other words, the finished DB will be huge, and very detailed.
That’s lots of Alice for you all to enjoy in one place.

And, we’ll release it digitally for free when it’s done.

The finished DB will also be going straight to the desks of all the SUPER MEGA CORPS we’re engaged with to try and get these deals for Alice done.

I expect there’ll also be some time spent in 2022 to polish and refine the DB after some more progress has been made. As before, we’ll be taking into account your input and including you all in the design process in the discussions here, on the Discord, social media platforms, and on the live streams.

There’ll be plenty of updated WIP snapshots of the DB as it is completed. Expect the next DB WIP update in the early months of 2022, with a steady stream of updates until completion.

Earlier in 2021, and before the story work was completed, we’d mentioned that we wanted to wrap all of this pre-production up around March-April 2022. This soft ETA is now looking very unrealistic to suit the quality we want to create for Alice: Asylum, and the amount of work that is now evident upon the completion of the narrative last month. The bottom line is, in order to make this all as good as it can be, we’re going to take a bit more time to get this right.

We’re a small team with big hurdles to jump over, but we will continue to do the best we can. And we want you to be with us every step of the way on that journey.

Lots of wonderful new artwork and new designs will be incoming for 2022. And, we’re now in the final stretch of pre-production.

Also, the green glimmer of Oz is shining on the horizon. More on that later. Prepare to get spooky.

Have a wonderful and safe New Year everyone. Thank you for all your support and involvement in the Alice pre-production project throughout 2021.

Some of us on the team will be here chipping away over the End of Year break, then we’re all hitting the ground running with a vengeance in the New Year.

If you come all the way to the bottom here, thank you for reading.

I’ll see you in the DB posts!

Cheers,

Alex

Farewell to 2021

Dear Insane Children,

The crazy year that was 2021 is in its final moments. And our team – like many of you – has been taking little bits of R&R between holiday events and spurts of Wonderland-inspired creativity. And behind the scenes… there’s a lot going on. But we’re going to save the major updates until the start of 2022… only a few days away now.

Due to the holidays and timing of various announcements… there will be NO Live Stream this week. But we are planning one for the week following (6th of January, 2022) and it’ll be a BIG one.

We’ll talk about our plans for Asylum in 2022 – and how we’re going to push to finish the Design Bible. We’ll also talk about work we’re starting that actually takes place inside the Unreal Engine. And (hopefully!) we’ll be able to share that big news I’ve been hinting at… (turns out the deal wasn’t 100% finished, hence the delay). I’ve been told it’s expected to be done any day now (take that with a grain of salt due to holidays).

Do you have hopes and plans for the new year?

Predictions on whether it’ll be an improvement over 2021 (or worse)?

One thing I know for sure in my house… is we’re having another baby in 2022. We’re hoping for a girl but won’t complain if we get another boy. Whatever physical form it takes… this child will be born in the year of the Tiger. Lucky’s a Pig. Yan and I are Rats. Quite the zoo! But I’ve been told that Chinese tradition says Tiger + Pig is a good combo. Who knew?

Let us know in the comments below your thoughts for 2022.

And we’ll be back soon with a big update post containing all the fun stuff you can expect from our team in the new year.

Oh, and Martin wanted me to share this month’s art print:

This is “Alice Meets Cheshire” and will be sent out to everyone charged at the appropriate tier for December (the charge happens at the start of January).  What a beautiful image!

Twas The Night Before Christmas

Dear Insane Children,

It’s Christmas Eve in Shanghai and all through the house… Lucky is running like a crazy little mouse. Christmas music is playing. There’s a star atop the tree. And there’s even a remote control dump truck waiting for Lucky to open tomorrow morning. Yay!

I hope that you are warm and happy wherever you are – and whatever you might or might not be celebrating these days.

One sad bit of news… I had hoped we’d share a cool announcement with you in time for Christmas. But I’ve been told that the press release is on hold until the start of 2022. Sorry about that! And for getting anyone’s hopes up (I know my hopes were up).

Still… when the news comes, I know everyone will be happy about it and will feel it was worth the wait.

That being said… I still come with gifts of new art! So fret not!

First up… the main image (above) is from Adam – a final render of “Torture”

The scene description reads:

The scene dissolves back to Alice’s audience with the Caterpillar.

Alice

That monster from the mirror is… me?

Caterpillar

Only a part of you. The monster lives within us all, Alice. But only a few can face it, much less embrace it.

Remove the mask, Alice. See the truth in who you are. See who you become. There is a darkness in you, in us all, that must be faced…

The world morphs again, and Alice is in Rutledge Asylum. A flurry of brutal cutscenes play as Alice is beaten, cut, starved, and slammed into the floor and walls of her cell. As her ears ring, we see Alice erupt in a vicious HYSTERIA. Her eyes turn pitch black. The scene zooms into the darkened depths of Alice’s eyes as circus music invades…

?<Scene Ends>

And woo, that’s a great illustration. Love it!

Joey also dropped an updated version of a scene from the opening of the game… where Alice enters her family home and finds the family celebrating around a tentacle cake. Yikes.!

That’s a yummy-looking cake, huh?

Last up, Gareth is working on storyboarding some critical scenes from the Narrative Outline…

These panels depict a section of the story where The Knave gets torn to bits by Shadow Alice. Nothing says “Christmas” like your inner shadow tearing apart an Insane Child!

Crowd Design: Radcliffe’s Demons

Dear Insane Children,

Here’s a fun Crowd Design task for everyone:

Help us define and design the demons that lurk inside the mind of an evil lawyer. Is “evil lawyer” redundant? Haha. Everyone loves to hate on lawyers… so this one should be easy!

From the Design Brief:

44.2) Enemy Design Tasks – Otherlands Enemy Designs – Page 165 (v2.1)

Art Task Briefing and Output:

?Render, explore and create as many end-game enemies as required that fit Radcliffe’s Otherland.

Can be rendered to represent twisted versions of Radcliffe, or horrible portions of his Psyche.
Manifestations of his own defense mechanisms and personal demons against Alice.

Answer the question; what is inside of Radcliffe’s head, and how would he fight back against Alice here?

—–

??Narrative Excerpt:

FINAL LEVEL

ALICE IN RADCLIFFE’S OTHERLAND

The walls of the room blow apart as Radcliffe and Alice tumble into a spiraling Abyss.

Alice floats with the elegance of a ballerina.

Radcliffe is crying and screaming out, a tumbling, blubbering mess, memories of vile deeds he has committed fly past and into his eyes. Horrible manifestations of insatiable greed, envy, and wrath swiftly devour, bite and chew at his body as he falls. Spiraling and tumbling into the void, the man cannot fathom or process his own darkness.

We PLAY as Alice runs through Radcliffe’s Otherland. She battles past hoards of his inner demons towards the seat of his consciousness. The world is a place of books and ledgers. Words and documents flutter through the sky overhead. The mind of a man whose internal world is propped up by twisted logic and the smugness of an expert in legal warfare. But his way with words is no match against Alice’s blade and cunning.

She reaches his center of logic and throws her Vorpal Blade into the works. In an instant, the edifice of his self-image is destroyed and the reality of his cruelty unleashed. The monster within is freed from its cage and allowed to run rampant throughout his mind-destroying everything it touches.

He has no light within. His darkness eats him alive. He is broken and lost.

Truly a monster within a monster.

Alice exits Radcliffe’s Otherland. Leaving him to be consumed from within by his own demons.

END of DESIGN BRIEF

And just to give you some idea of what we’re going for here…

This was a unique monster design Joey did a while back. We need stuff like this… but in a theme more fitting to Radcliffe’s mind.

Let us know what you come up with!

PS: I am still waiting on news regarding the news that I’m hoping gets announced soon. I was told to expect it late last week or early this week. And I also hope that we can do a special Live Stream around that topic once the news is announced. Now… I guess there’s a chance these guys might email and say, “It’s not happening before Christmas” … in which case, boo. But also, that probably means there won’t be a Live Stream this week. Let’s wait and see though… I’ll keep you updated!

I hope everyone is preparing for a warm and happy holiday.

Reborn Again

Dear Insane Children,

Another trip around the sun for me – today (December 13th in the USA) is my 49th birthday. Woo.

And it’s an excellent birthday too! I am VERY HAPPY with where life is these days. Surrounded by a happy family, supported by wonderful Insane Children, making tons of great art, design, story, and plush toys.

And I happen to know that we’re going to announce something very cool in the next few days…

Due to that announcement, I want to postpone this week’s live stream. Save it for next week – that way we can dedicate a large portion of the stream to discussing that announcement and what it means for everything we’re working on.

We’ll also have lots of great art to discuss. Like the Final Version of “The Christening” from Omri (main image above). Glorious!

And some really amazing Work In Progress stuff as well like this Alice + Queen boss fight:

In the meantime, I hope ya’ll are having a great week.
